MUMBAI:
Lalchand Rajput is not only respected as a coach but is also regarded as an able administrator. The former India opener is vying for the joint secretary's post after serving his term as a managing committee member. He spoke to TOI on various issues.
You were the secretary of the MCA and have been a managing committee member for a number of years. Are you satisfied with the administration? There is no doubt that the administration of MCA has suffered in the last 3-4 years.
This fact is admitted even by Ravi Savant, who in an article, has said that the reason he is contesting for the Jt. secretary's post is because the policies are not being implemented properly. Mumbai cricket has suffered because of interference of administrators in the selection process. The H.D. Kanga league, which was the only tournament conducted by MCA for its members, has been scrapped and most of the clubs and players are not happy with this decision.
What according to you are the solutions? As a past cricketer with a management background (MBA), I am confident of improving the general administration and also contributing to the growth of Mumbai cricket. There is a need for better coordination between office bearers, the Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) members and the coaching staff at the indoor cricket academy.
You've been successful as a coach and you were also the convener of the MCA academy in the past. Why isn't the academy producing the desired results? I've been fortunate enough to associate myself with cricket coaching for more than 20 years in different capacities and have successfully carried out my responsibilities whenever I was offered an opportunity. Many young batsmen have been in touch with me and I try to give them suggestions to enhance their performances. It's true that the MCA indoor academy has not taken off as was expected and I would like to give top priority to start the activities at the MCA indoor academy with proper coaches and other support staff. I have already made a presentation to the last managing committee in this regard as the chairman of the indoor cricket academy but unfortunately there was hardly any effort to implement the suggestions.
What will be the five crucial steps you will take to bring back those glorious days of Mumbai cricket? Start by making the MCA indoor academy as a high performance centre with satellite centres at Kandivili, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar, Dahanu etc.
To initiate talent scouts program to identify talent, nurture players and follow their progress.
To invite former cricketers to take up jobs as coaches, match observers, selectors etc.
To have sub-centres for players' registration so that the players and club secretaries who live in the distant suburbs don't have to travel all the way to the cricket centre.
To revamp the local tournaments and restart the H D kanga league which was one of the important tournaments which the clubs and players looked forward to and start the Mumbai Premier League.
